A Interpretative Trails At Fort Ancient
Wandering the trails is an excellent way to share nature, and along the way learn about a region. A interesting fact about Fort Ancient is that the Indian's who lived here occupied much of the Ohio area between 800 B.C. and 1200 A.D. and for unknown reasons moved away from the area around 400 A. D. I found this to be a very fascinating information and a neat area to check out. The last area is the Hiking and Interpretative trails, and I am a person who loves to hike.
Hiking and Interpretative Trails - The Hiking and Interpretative Trails are situated atop a wooded bluff rising 235 feet above the Little Miami River. There are nearly two miles of trails on the site’s 764 acres. The trails all have various level of difficulty, some are easier than others. The Earthworks Trail is an easier trail being that it is fairly level, and it offers two scenic overlooks and some really great clear views of the earthworks area.
The half-mile Terrace Trail is also level except for a steep climb at each end. This trail is a little more difficult but is a great trail in the spring with all the wildflowers in bloom to see. Then you have the Connector Trail that has a higher level of difficulty. The trail descends a quarter-mile downhill to the Little Miami Scenic Trail, which is a segment of the 1,200-mile-long Buckeye Trail and North Country National Scenic Trail. Next is the one-quarter-mile Stone Circle Trail that is located behind the Museum. This trail is flat which makes it one of the easier trails to explore.
Help Preserve Nature - While exploring Fort Ancient please help guard the site’s precious natural and archaeological resources by following a few guidelines. State law forbids walking off trails or on any mound or earthwork. It is also against the law to harm or remove any plant, animal fossil, or other natural feature or archaeological artifact. Fort Ancient is operated by the Ohio Historical Society, a nonprofit organization that serves as the state’s partner in preserving and interpreting Ohio’s history, archaeology and natural history.
